Winter storm alters course of 2016 CROWBAR race

A local group, Nordic United, was forced to adapt to a winter storm as they prepared for its annual backcountry race, known as CROWBAR Cache Regional Overland Winter BAckcountry Race on Saturday.

Several cancellations were also made as some contestants decided to avoid the canyon roads all together.

Despite the winter conditions, 46 people participated in the race which began at the Sink Hollow Trailhead. The race started later than planned to adapt to the slick, icy roads.

“You can can’t control mother nature but we can adapt to it,” said Mike Taylor, secretary and webmaster of Nordic United.

The event was split into three divisions— junior division, rec division and a race division, with the race division being miles long.

“These events are important to our community because they help people know about Cache Valley,” said Julie Hollist Terrill, director of the Cache Valley Visitors Bureau.

The race was an overall success according to Taylor, despite the adjustments and cancelations that were made.
